The 15th Annual MCRCS Bomb/Parachute Drop Contest
took place on October 17th as it had been delayed one week due to
bad weather. Weather turned out to be sunny after a night
of rain but somewhat windy with average winds of about 12 mph and gusting up to
20 mph with temperatures in the 60’s. We
still had a good turnout of both pilots and non-participating members. We had
12 entrants in the Bomb Drop and 6 entrants in the Parachute Drop. Some members called it quits after only 1
flight due to the high winds and Ben’s plane blew off the table with some
damage before he even attempted to fly. For
this year’s contest, we only used a point system and counted all three
drops. We also incorporated a 50-foot
diameter circle in addition to the other inner circles. This worked out great for the score keepers
during the contest with no tedious measuring.
We completed the contest with a great lunch with all the fixings. We need to also thank Irwin Keshner, Jim Meighan, Chris Leeds, and
Brian Bunda for their help in making the day a great success!
Bomb Drop
–
Five out of the
eleven pilots that flew got their bombs to fall inside the white 50 ft diameter
circle. Carl Gubkin (Tundra) got all his
drops to hit within the circles and took first place with a total of 7
points. Chris Webb (S. Cub) and Nobu
Iwasawa (Votek) tied for second place each with a total of 6 points. Johannes (Sail Plane) came in 3rd
place with 4 points. Bob Levanduski (Ultra Stick), Joe Ramando (Flengling),
and Andy Fodor (Ugly Stick) all tied for 4th with 3 points. Greg Lucidi (Tundra), John Zangrando (Sport), George Miller (Aerostar) and Irwin Keshner (Tiger 2) all had just 1 point.
Parachute
Drop –
Two out of six pilots got inside the 50 ft diameter
circle. That included both Chris Webb
(S. Cub) and George Miller (Aerostar).
George took 1st place with 4 points while Chris tied for 2nd
with Nobu Iwasawa (Votek) with 3 points.
Chris would have tied for 1st place but one of his chutes did
not deploy. Johannes (Sail
Plane) and Carl Gubkin (Tundra) tied for 3rd place with 2 points as
they each had one of their chutes not deploy properly. Bob Levanduski (Ultra Stick) had only 1 point
as the contest ended before he could perform any more drop attempts One other note is that George did a cart
wheel on one of his take-offs. After the
addition of some masking tape he was able to make some later flights and
completed the contest. He also lost some
control of his plane but somehow managed two safe landings in the parking
lot. We have one on these on video
thanks to Johannes.
