5th Annual
Bomb/Parachute Drop Contest
October 9, 2011

You couldn’t ask for a nicer day for the contest! A blue clear sky, low wind, low 80’s all contributed to a fantastic flying day. We had 8 entrants for the Bomb Drop and 3 for the Parachute Drop Contest.

Rich Lee, one of our returning winners, had a near bull’s-eye in a practice run just before the start of the competition. Later during his contest run, he crashed during his first attempt and his plane was never the same. This opened up the door for Bob Bennett to finish first in the Bomb Drop contest with a total of 5 points with his magnetic bomb release mechanism. Jim Feszchak finished second with his single drop of 4 points (closest @ 6-1/2 feet from the flag).  Jim’s plane crashed right after his first drop as he found it more interesting to watch the next contestants plane release its bomb rather then safety land his.

Both Nobu Iwasawa and Carl Gubkin battled out the Parachute contest. Each had two points but Nobu edged out Carl with a drop about 20-1/2 ft from the flag. Another pervious winner, John Tanzer, crashed on take-off and could not compete in either event.

The following are the standings of the bomb and parachute contest:

1st PlaceBob Bennett - 5 Points (Quaker - Closest was 8-1/2 feet from the flag)
2nd PlaceJim Feszchak – 4 Points (Ultra Stick - Closest was 6-1/2 feet from flag)
3rd PlaceCarl Gubkin – 2 Points (Cub - Closest was 6 feet from flag)
Note: Since no one was watching as Carl flew at the end of the contest, we cannot substantiate this drop and will only give him 1 point rather than 4 points. Carl states that when he went to pick up the center flag at the end of the contest, he could not find his bomb near the release point. When he turned back toward the target, his black and hard to see bomb was only 6 feet from the flag.
4th PlaceRich Lee – 2 Points (Electric Trojan – Closest was 15-1/2 feet from flag)
5th PlaceNobu Iwasawa – 2 Points (Profile – Closest was 15-1/2 feet from flag)
